We have also examined the age of the companion (i.e., nonprostitute) with whom the members of this group had their first coitus after puberty. This, we hoped, might shed light on why a female of a particular age was the object of the later sex offense. In general, this hope was but partly fulfilled. The offenders vs. children rank fourth among those whose first coitus was with girls under twelve; fourth in the twelve to thirteen age bracket; and then in middle or low rank in categories of older females. In brief, there is some tendency for them to have had their first coitus with quite young females, but the tendency is not marked.
So much for the record of overt behavior with young females. Their age preferences as expressed verbally are something else again. Of the 199 offenders vs. children only one lone person reported a preference for girls under twelve. Of our sample of 1,356 white male sex offenders
there are only three reports of such a low age preference, and one of the three is from an offender vs. children and another from an offender vs. minors. However, among those whose age preference falls in the twelve- to fifteen-year-old bracket, the offenders vs. children, with 11 per cent, rank second only to the aggressors vs. minors. Only 2 per cent of the control group expressed age preferences including females under sixteen.
